Naidu\u2019s remarkable journey shows us that innovation is rarely about avoiding risk. It is about taking the right risks before everyone else is ready to.<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we celebrate innovators, we usually celebrate what they created. We talk about inventions, businesses, patents, technologies and breakthroughs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What receives far less attention is the risk that existed before the breakthrough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before an invention works, there is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technology risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Before customers buy it, there is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> market risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Before a factory produces it at scale, there is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">execution risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And before society accepts a radically different idea, there is often <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reputation risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The life of Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu (1893\u20131974) is a fascinating Indian example of this relationship between risk and innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popularly called the \u201cEdison of India,\u201d the Coimbatore-based inventor and industrialist worked across transportation, electrical engineering, automobiles, electronics, consumer products, agriculture and technical education. His experiments and enterprises included electric motors, radios, recording and counting devices, automotive components and several other technologies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is particularly remarkable is that this technological journey was undertaken by someone with very little formal education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viewed through the lens of <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theirmindia.org\/what-is-enterprise-risk-management-erm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Enterprise Risk Management<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Naidu\u2019s life offers an interesting proposition:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Perhaps the greatest innovators are not people who avoid risk. They are people who develop an unusual <\/b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theirmindia.org\/international-certificate-enterprise-risk-management-irmcert-level2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>risk appetite<\/b><\/a><\/span> <b>for uncertainty when they believe the potential reward is worth pursuing.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are eight risks that defined G.D. Naidu\u2019s journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Risk 1: He Took a <\/b><b>Capability Risk<\/b><b> \u2014 Learning by Doing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naidu did not enter engineering through the conventional route of formal technical education. His education was limited, yet his curiosity about machinery developed into practical technical capability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That represented a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">substantial risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without degrees, institutional infrastructure or an established professional pathway, he had to depend heavily on observation, experimentation and self-learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what appeared to be a disadvantage eventually became part of his distinctive approach to innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of separating theory from application, he learnt through interaction with machines and real-world problems. That philosophy would later become central to the educational institutions and science initiatives associated with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lesson is not that formal education is unnecessary. It is that capability can also be created through experimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For organisations, the equivalent question is powerful: do we allow people to experiment outside the precise boundaries of their qualifications and job descriptions?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Innovation often starts there.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Risk 2: He Took <\/b><b>Entrepreneurial Risk<\/b><b> \u2014 Starting with a Bus<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before becoming synonymous with invention, Naidu built his presence in transportation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He began with a single bus and eventually developed a substantial bus operation. They break down. Routes have to be managed. Passengers expect reliability. Maintenance failures create <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theirmindia.org\/global-qualifications\/enterprise-risk-management-evolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>operational risk<\/b><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and disruption. Expansion creates workforce and management challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the transport business gave Naidu something equally important: problems worth solving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The need to repair and service his buses efficiently encouraged him to manufacture spare parts himself. That interest subsequently expanded into industrial manufacturing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It demonstrates a recurring pattern in innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Risk creates problems. Problems create the need for solutions. And solutions can create entirely new businesses.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Risk 3: He Took <\/b><b>Technology Risk<\/b><b> \u2014 Experimenting Beyond One Field<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naidu refused to remain confined to a single technological domain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the innovations attributed to him are electrical motors, radios, electronic counting equipment, recording machines and camera-related devices. Contemporary accounts also associate him with inventions such as an electric razor, vote-recording machine and juice extractor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This breadth matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every time an innovator moves into an unfamiliar technological area, uncertainty increases. Knowledge from one discipline may not transfer perfectly into another. Prototypes can fail. Money and time can disappear into experiments that produce no commercially useful result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The safer strategy would have been specialisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naidu repeatedly chose exploration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern organisations frequently speak about innovation while simultaneously demanding predictable returns from every experiment. His work is also associated with the development of an indigenous electric motor in the 1930s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufacturing converts <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technology risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a much wider risk universe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now there are suppliers, machines, workers, quality standards, production costs, working capital and customers to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A prototype only has to prove that something can work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A factory has to prove that it can work again and again at an economically sustainable cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naidu was willing to cross that divide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That willingness is one reason his legacy extends beyond that of an inventor. He was also an industrialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Risk 5: He Took Market Risk \u2014 Betting on Affordability<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recurring feature of Naidu\u2019s work was his interest in making technology practical and accessible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His innovations were not restricted to scientific curiosities. Radios, razors, automobile components and other devices addressed actual consumer or industrial needs. His enterprises manufactured products intended for real use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This introduces another uncertainty: Will the market accept the innovation?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A technically superior product can fail if customers do not understand it, cannot afford it or simply prefer an existing alternative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Innovation therefore requires more than technological imagination. It requires assumptions about human behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naidu repeatedly made those bets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we might describe this as customer-centric innovation. In his era, it meant something more fundamental: believing that technology should solve practical problems rather than remain inaccessible to ordinary users.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Risk 6: He Took <\/b><b>Global Exposure Risk<\/b><b> \u2014 Learning From the World and Bringing It Home<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naidu travelled internationally and visited companies in Europe and the United States to study emerging technologies. Learn quickly. Bring knowledge back. Experiment locally.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Risk 7: He Took <\/b><b>Cross Sector Risk<\/b><b> \u2014 From Engineering to Agriculture<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps one of the clearest signs of Naidu\u2019s appetite for experimentation was that machinery did not define the limits of his curiosity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His work extended into agriculture, where he experimented with cultivation and crop development. His broader body of work crossed electrical, mechanical, automotive and agricultural fields.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an important form of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">innovation risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because crossing industries removes familiarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture introduces variables that engineering cannot completely control: soil, weather, biology, disease and growing conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet multidisciplinary experimentation is often where unconventional ideas emerge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today we celebrate intersections such as AI and healthcare, finance and behavioural science, biotechnology and agriculture, or climate science and engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naidu demonstrated the same instinct decades earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He did not ask only, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat industry am I in?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His behaviour suggests a more powerful question:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat problem can I solve?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Risk 8: He Took Failure Risk \u2014 And Continued Experimenting<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may be the most important risk of all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every experiment becomes an industry. Not every prototype becomes a successful product. Not every innovative idea receives the ecosystem support required to reach scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet Naidu continued experimenting across an extraordinary range of areas throughout his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His legacy therefore cannot be understood simply by counting successful products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should also be understood through his portfolio of attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is highly relevant to contemporary innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organisations often celebrate innovation but punish unsuccessful experiments. Employees quickly understand the contradiction. If failure damages careers, budgets or reputations, people naturally choose safer ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">True innovation requires a different approach to risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It requires distinguishing between intelligent failure and reckless failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reckless failure comes from ignoring information, controls or obvious consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intelligent failure occurs when a reasonable hypothesis is tested, uncertainty is acknowledged, exposure is controlled and the organisation learns from the outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naidu\u2019s extraordinary volume of experimentation demonstrates why that distinction matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Bigger Lesson: <\/b><b>Risk Management<\/b><b> Should Enable Innovation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G.D. Naidu\u2019s story challenges one of the most persistent misconceptions about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: that managing risk means preventing people from taking it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A business that takes no risk cannot innovate. A researcher unwilling to risk a failed experiment cannot discover very much. An entrepreneur unwilling to accept uncertainty cannot create a new market. And an organisation that demands certainty before investing in an idea will usually arrive after someone else has already proved it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The role of good <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk management<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is therefore not to put a wall between an organisation and uncertainty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is to help the organisation build a strong <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk culture<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, develop <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resilience,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and answer better questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What are we trying to achieve?\u2028What could prevent us from achieving it?\u2028Which uncertainties are worth accepting?\u2028How much can we afford to lose?\u2028What can we learn if the experiment fails?\u2028And how quickly can we adapt?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naidu\u2019s journey\u2014from transportation and spare parts to manufacturing, electronics, automobiles, agriculture and technical learning\u2014provides a remarkable Indian case study of what happens when curiosity is combined with a willingness to act under uncertainty.
